Awwal-e-Waqat - Zohrain Prayer
Awwal-e-Waqat - Maghribain Prayer
A sport is a physical activity that involves strategy, skills, commitment, honesty, diligence and entertainment. Playing any form of sports has been regarded as healthy and a means to develop the body especially among the youth. Sports are not only a mere means of filling time but far beyond that. Playing sports help in improving competitive skills, and improving oneself through the acceptance of defeat without any mental struggle and pressure about the competition.
Apart from all this, sports have some very good and exciting moments that teach a man on how to keep fighting at crucial moments of life. When a man plays some active sport be it tennis, badminton, cricket, swimming or other athletics, soccer etc, the physical exercise makes him stronger, resilient, stiffer and active. On the contrary, when a man stays away from active sport and waste time in resting, sleeping, sitting on a chair for long hours, watching television, playing video games; he is doing not only doing his body a harm with excess stored fat but he is wasting his life with all the beautiful faculties Allah has provided him with. Therefore, it is highly recommended to be health conscious and one should always remain keen and active to play any sport.
Importance of Sports in Islam
Islam has given due importance to sports and entertainment. Islam is a practical religion and as such it does not ignore any genuine human requirement. The Prophet of Islam Muhammad (peace be upon him) liked happiness and disliked grief.
Our holy Imams have also emphasised on being healthy and staying fit. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) has said, "One of the blessings [of God] is the abundance of wealth; however, better than abundance of wealth is the health of the body."
Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq (peace be upon him) has also said, "A believer who is physically strong is better than a weak believer." Islam does not oppose having a strong body via practicing sports. Muslims are commanded to be of sound bodies and sound minds in addition to having sound morals. A sound strong body is capable of fulfilling both the religious and the worldly duties.
Our Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) has also encouraged learning several activities such as archery, horse riding and swimming which were more prevalent in those days. Now, we can metaphorically interpret it and learn other sports as well such as Cricket and Soccer along with these mentioned by the prophet.
Sports should play an important role in our Islamic societies. The benefits of sports can lead to a healthier Islamic society on a social level and a healthier lifestyle for individuals.
We should also be motivated by some of our role models, for example double Olympic gold medallist in heavy weightlifting from Iran, Hossein Rezazadeh, who is also known as ‘Iranian Herculian’. Apparently in Olympics, Rezazadeh came and lifted the heavyweights by shouting ‘Ya Abul Fazlil Abbas’ and received the gold medal.
Therefore, we should also have taqwa while playing any sport so that it brings out the best from us while we perform any action.
